Ministry of Maritime Affairs Arrests Chinese Heritage Treasure Hunters in Riau Sea

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has arrested 3 treasure hunting ships in the Riau Islands.

These three ships are suspected of lifting cargo from a sunken ship without valid permit documents in the sea waters around Pengikik Island and the sea waters around Tambelan Island.

The Director General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Supervision, Rear Admiral TNI Adin Nurawaluddin stated that the three ships were successfully captured during the operation of the HIU 11 Marine and Fisheries Monitoring Ship, on Tuesday (11/7/2023).

“On that day, our team succeeded in stopping, inspecting and detaining 3 fishing vessels which were suspected of carrying out activities to lift cargo from sunken ships in the sea waters around Pengikik Island and the sea waters around Tambelan Island without providing valid documents,” said Adin at the press conference. in Pontianak on Wednesday (8/11/2023).

Adin explained that the three ships included KM. CC (16 GT), KM. RI (15 GT), and KM. PI (6 GT).
It is known that the three ships came from Tanjung Pinang, Riau Islands, with a total crew of 44 Indonesian citizens. During an inspection by officers, 1,218 pieces of cargo from the sunken ship were found, consisting of large jars, medium jars, small jars, plates, bowls and ancient coins on the three ships.

“In accordance with Article 18 of Law Number 6 of 2023 concerning the Stipulation of Perpu Number 2 of 2022 concerning Job Creation, every person who utilizes the resources of coastal waters and small islands, including the activity of lifting sunken ship cargo, is required to have a Business License. “, explained Adin.

Adin continued that in Article 3 of Presidential Regulation (Perpres) Number 8 of 2023 concerning Management of sunken ships’ cargo, it is stated that the management of sunken ships’ cargo is carried out, one of the ways, through the removal of sunken ships’ cargo.

The lifting of cargo from a sinking ship is carried out by business actors through a business licensing mechanism and following the provisions of laws and regulations in the field of risk-based business licensing.

As a result of a temporary study of the evidence found, the type of cargo from the sunken ship which was illegally lifted from the sea waters around Pengikik Island and the sea waters around Tambelan Island is suspected to be similar to the lifting of the sunken ship’s cargo from the waters of Batu Belobang and Kijang Province, Riau Islands. , as well as lifting goods from sunken ships from Jepara Waters, Central Java Province.

It is estimated that it was made during the Song Dynasty which originated in China in the 10th to 13th centuries AD.

“The perpetrator will be subject to administrative sanctions in the form of government coercion by sealing the sunken ship’s cargo that has been recovered. Next, a study will be carried out by the Team of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology to determine the status of the sunken ship’s cargo, whether it is an object suspected of being cultural heritage or not, as a follow-up to the mandate of Presidential Regulation (Perpres) Number 8 of 2023 concerning Management of Sunken Ship Cargo,” said Adin.

As is known, the cargo of a sunken ship is the cargo of a sunken ship which has historical, scientific, cultural and economic value at the bottom of the sea.

Based on Government Regulation (PP) Number 32 of 2019 concerning Marine Spatial Planning, there are 1,167 sinking ship cargo points in 19 water locations in Indonesia that have the potential for ship cargo sinking. (AT Network)
