ASIATODAY.ID, YOGYAKARTA – The climate crisis has become a real threat to planet Earth today. The reason is that various crisis threats occur in waves and one of the most worrying ones is the food crisis.
Head of the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, Dwikorita Karnawati, encouraged collaboration between ASEAN countries to mitigate the threat of a food crisis that could occur in the region due to the climate crisis.
“The current climate change is having a serious impact on the economy of all countries without exception, including in terms of food security. “If this situation continues, the World Food and Agriculture Organization predicts that in 2050 the world will face a food crisis,” he said in a statement in Jakarta, quoted on Sunday, November 19 2023.
Dwikoritas conveyed this while attending the ASEAN Federation of Economists Association (FAEA) Conference in Yogyakarta on Friday, November 17 2023. At the conference, he also emphasized that sustainable economic progress and growth in all ASEAN countries should be accompanied by policy commitments to the environment and food security. .
He said that based on records from the World Meteorological Organization, 2023 will be the record for the highest temperature change. This condition has never happened before, where a heat wave occurred in many areas simultaneously.
“June to August are the three hottest months in history and July 2023 is the hottest month. The reality of climate change means that 2023 has the potential to become the hottest year in the history of climate records, beating 2016 and 2022,” he said.
This climate change, he said, puts additional pressure on water resources that are already increasingly scarce and produces what are known as water hotspots.
“The climate crisis, which also triggers a food crisis, will have an impact on other crises, including economic and political, thereby disrupting the stability and security of the country. Therefore, before it is too late, various climate change mitigation and adaptation actions need to be taken, including lifestyle changes,” he said .
These lifestyle changes, he said, must prioritize economic development that is environmentally friendly.
The 46th FAEA Conference is an annual conference involving members of economist associations from seven countries, namely five ASEAN countries plus Vietnam and Cambodia.
The event was attended by 200 economists with backgrounds in academics, business, government, practitioners, policy makers and students from ASEAN member countries and other partners.
With the theme “Strengthening Collaboration to Form a Sustainable ASEAN Economy”, ASEAN economists discussed various economic issues relevant to the ASEAN region while increasing cooperation and scientific exchange between countries. (AT Network)
