ASIATODAY.ID, DUBAI – The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to continue to support the important role of the United Nations (UN) in overcoming global challenges.
In his bilateral meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at Expo City Dubai, Saturday, December 2 2023, Jokowi said that the UN has an important role in facing the severity of global challenges and shifts in geopolitical power, and emphasized the importance of multilateralism and mutual trust which are now under threat.
The meeting also included a discussion on climate action, where Jokowi highlighted the concrete steps Indonesia has taken to deal with climate change. In addition, Indonesia appreciated the Joint Environmental and Trade Plan (JETP) initiative, while proposing that global climate finance must involve broader collaboration between developed and developing countries.
Jokowi also emphasized support for the funding agenda at COP28, especially in the operationalization of loss and damage funding as well as collaborative renewable energy funding for developing countries.
On the Gaza issue, Jokowi emphasized Indonesia’s tough stance towards Israeli violence against civilian facilities. Indonesia supports international investigations into Israeli violations in Gaza and calls for a permanent cessation of violence for the safety of civilians.
In the end, President Jokowi emphasized the importance of safe and unhindered humanitarian aid entering Gaza and carrying out intensive diplomacy with several OIC Foreign Ministers for Gaza. (AT Network)
