ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia is one of the countries that actively sends peacekeeping troops to countries experiencing conflict. However, until now Indonesia has not sent peacekeeping troops to Gaza.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Retno Marsudi, said that Indonesia would only send peacekeeping troops to Gaza if it received a United Nations mandate.

“So far, we have always been the biggest sender of peacekeepers. I get a lot of questions, if for example there is ongoing conflict, will Indonesia contribute troops? We will only contribute if it is under the UN, and the UN means based on the mandate of the UN Security Council,” said Retno, Wednesday, December 27 2023.

Retno emphasized that if there was no mandate from the UN, Indonesia would not participate or send peacekeepers to the battlefield.

“We are one of the 10 largest contributing countries. This is a mandate from our Constitution, especially its preamble, that we must contribute to maintaining world peace. So that is one of the translations,” he said.

As previously known, the ASEAN Ministry of Defense has also discussed sending peacekeeping troops to Gaza, Palestine.

Malaysian Defense Minister Mohamad Hassan said that issues related to Palestine were raised in the meeting of ASEAN Defense Ministers.

“We want to hear ASEAN’s voice, because we believe in ASEAN’s important role. “It is very important that all ASEAN countries agree that we must send troops to Palestine under the UN flag,” he said, as reported by Bernama, Wednesday, November 1 2023.

Hassan stated that so far there has been no UN decision regarding sending peacekeeping troops to Gaza, Palestine. (AT Network)
