China Becomes First Worst Country in Fighting IUUF, Romania First Best, Indonesia?

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Global Initiative and Poseidon launched the 2023 illegal unreported unregulated fishing (IUUF) Risk Index report.

Based on the report, China ranks first as the country with the worst performance in fighting IUUF. Other countries on this list include Russia, Yemen, India, Iran, Taiwan, South Comoros, Korea and Ukraine for overall responsibility and all types of indicators, as well as for indicators grouped by vulnerability, prevalence and response.

The IUUF fishing risk index covers 152 coastal countries in the world and the score for each country is calculated based on 40 indicators. This relates to the prevalence of IUUF fishing in each country as well as the state’s vulnerability and response to this, which is assessed based on the state’s responsibility towards coastal areas, flags, ports and the state in general.

The report notes that no country has a score above 4.00 or below 1.49 when aggregated by responsibility. As many as 83% of 126 countries are in the range of 2.00 to 2.99.

If the scores are broken down by type of vulnerability, prevalence, and response indicators, scores for countries are more widely distributed for both response and vulnerability indicators, whereas most countries score between 1.00 and 1.99 for prevalence.

Meanwhile, China ranks first as the worst country for handling IUUF with a score of 3.69, while Ukraine ranks 10th with a score of 2.72.

According to the vulnerability score, an indicator related to the risk of IUUF, Indonesia is in fifth place with a score of 4.08 in 2023. This score has not changed compared to the 2021 index. Compared with the 2019 index, the score has increased by 0.16.

Furthermore, according to the prevalence score, indicators related to suspected IUUF incidents, Indonesia is in third place with a score of 3.22, while according to the response score, indicators related to actions aimed at reducing IUUF, Indonesia is not in the top 10.

Meanwhile, Romania occupies first place as the country with the best performance in fighting IUUF. With a score of 1.62, Romania takes first place, followed by Finland, Belgium, Sweden, Australia, Iceland, Argentina, Monaco, Canada and Slovenia.
