French Financial Prosecutor Searches Huawei Offices, What’s Happening?

Huawei Office. Doc

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Huawei Technologies’ offices in France were searched by local financial prosecutors.

French Justice Ministry officials said the search was carried out because Huawei was suspected of committing ‘atteinte à la probité’, a term that includes corruption or misuse of public funds, and other crimes. However, he refused to provide further details regarding the alleged actions.

Reporting from SCMP, Saturday, February 10 2024, Huawei France in its official statement said that the search took place on Tuesday, February 6 2024 at its office. Huawei representatives emphasized that their party had fully cooperated with the investigation into this case.

“Huawei has been in France for more than 20 years, and has complied with all French laws and regulations,” said a Huawei representative in an official statement.

French news site l’Informe first reported the investigation. Huawei itself currently has a research center in France and is building its first production factory outside China, in a city near Strasbourg.

In December 2023, Huawei France co-head Zhang Minggang told radio station France Inter that the factory, which will produce telecommunications equipment for the European market, is scheduled to open in late 2025 and will employ 500 people in the long term.

Reporting from Gizmochina, despite experiencing a decline in revenue in recent years, Huawei continues to collaborate with French cellular operators to implement the 5G network. However, the company faced obstacles, including restrictions from the French government on its participation in the country’s wireless infrastructure.

The search of Huawei’s offices in France highlights wider international attention on the company. In the context of tensions between China and the United States, Huawei was accused of engaging in potential state espionage, an accusation the company strongly condemned.

The European Commission also expressed concern about the security risks presented by Huawei and other Chinese technology companies, prompting calls to exclude their equipment from mobile networks in Europe. (AT Network)
