Fishing Boat Accident in Japan, 20 Indonesian Crew Members Become Victims

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia on Tuesday, March 5 2024, announced that the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo had received information from the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) in Shimoda, Shizuoka regarding the accident of the Tuna Fishing Ship, Fukuei maru number 8.

The ship ran aground on the Izu Islands, Tokyo, Japan on 3 March 2024. Fukuei maru ship number 8 sailed from Kagoshima Harbor in Kagoshima Prefecture with a total crew of 25 people consisting of 1 captain, 2 officers and 22 crew members.

Of the entire crew, 20 people were Indonesian crew members.

“All Indonesian crew members are safe and have been evacuated using the JCG Shimoda helicopter to the nearest hospital in Kozushima, Tokyo. One person was injured, but is being treated,” said a statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo has coordinated with the labor agency that sent the Indonesian crew regarding this disaster. The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo is also in contact with JCG Shimoda and will coordinate future steps.

This accident occurred because the ship was hit by high waves off the southwest coast of Tokyo.

One crew member was thrown from the rocking ship and plunged into the open sea. The crew was reportedly found dead.

Before being hit by high waves, the Fukuei Maru number 8 ship experienced engine failure on Sunday afternoon in the Pacific Ocean, or exactly five hours after sailing from the port of Yaizu in central Japan. The ship was headed to South America to look for Tuna.

The Fukuei Maru number 8 ship is thought to have drifted into the open sea and was further away because it was being blown by strong winds.

The ship’s captain sent out a five-hour distress signal because the ship hit rocks. Luckily, within two hours the rescue team arrived at the scene. When the rescue team arrived. The crew reported one crew member missing.

The Japanese Coast Guard Team then sent several patrol boats and three helicopters with a special team to the location where the Fukuei Maru number 8 ship was adrift.

Fukuei Maru number 8 is 183 feet (55 meters) long and weighs 379 tons. (ATN)
