ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian government is collaborating with China and Singapore to collaborate on a seaweed downstream program in Indonesia.

This was conveyed by Jodi Mahardi, Spokesperson for the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Wednesday, April 24 2024.

Jodi said that this seaweed development program would be implemented in a number of areas such as West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Maluku and Sulawesi. The government has also sent a team to India to study the seaweed industry in that country.

The relatively fast harvest period for seaweed is one of the reasons for the Indonesian government to develop the cultivation of this commodity, in addition to its quite diverse uses, from cosmetics to jelly.

The Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, previously collaborated with China to manage 2.5 million hectares of seaweed land in stages.

As an initial stage, Luhut offered 100,000 hectares of seaweed land to China to start managing.

Luhut hopes that the development of seaweed cultivation will have a positive impact considering that 60% of the population in Indonesia lives on the coast.

“This provides a truly extraordinary solution and it is also the largest seaweed in the world,” he concluded. (ATN)
