Nicke Widyawati Conveys Two Strategies to Achieve ASEAN Economic Community

Pertamina President Director Nicke Widyawati when presenting two outcome-based strategies to support the implementation of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) Post-2025 Development at the Leadership Forum session at the ASCOPE 8th Mid-Year Meeting 2024. Special

ASIATODAY.ID, BALI – Pertamina reiterates its support for achieving the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) 2045 through the implementation of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) Post-2025 Development, which is a blueprint for regional energy cooperation in ASEAN.

This support was explained directly by Pertamina President Director Nicke Widyawati at the ASEAN Council on Petroleum (ASCOPE) Mid-Year Task Force Meeting 2024 which took place in Bali, 27-30 May 2024.

Nicke as Council Member of ASCOPE Indonesia, said that APAEC’s strategic direction can be aligned with the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, so that the results can maximize policy making that supports the implementation of ASEAN multilateral energy cooperation.

From Pertamina’s side, Nicke proposed two impact-based strategies.

“Pertamina proposes that the program area be expanded, which essentially includes security, affordability and sustainability of oil and gas. To achieve this goal, Pertamina presents two proposed outcome-based strategies,” said Nicke at the ASCOPE Leadership Forum session.

The two proposed outcome-based strategies from Pertamina are, firstly, advancing the connectivity of the trans-ASEAN gas pipeline (TAGP).

Indonesia, through Pertamina, proposes to increase gas/LNG accessibility and connectivity through physical and virtual pipeline networks and regasification terminals.

“The Trans-ASEAN Gas Pipeline Program must continue to be implemented in a sustainable manner. The ASCOPE Gas Advocacy Task Force has made progressive efforts where the MoU between countries has been extended until 2034 and covers more infrastructure including virtual pipeline infrastructure to increase connectivity and accessibility in the ASEAN region,” explained Nicke.

The second strategy is to improve energy security, affordability and sustainability through four action plans that cover perspectives from upstream to downstream. Starting from mapping regional oil and gas resources and off-pipeline supply-demand balancing systems to support energy security and regional economic growth, developing upstream fields by implementing low-carbon technologies (such as decarbonization, methane reduction, CCS/CCUS, low-carbon LNG ), increasing the use of diversified energy sources by utilizing gas derivatives (such as methanol, hydrogen and ammonia) to support low-carbon solutions, and what is no less important is the establishment of the ASEAN Center of Excellence for Oil, Gas and Bioenergy which can increase capacity and skills in the advancement of low carbon technology to support the net zero emissions target.

In closing, Nicke emphasized the importance of aligning energy strategies through collaboration to achieve optimal benefits for each company and country.

“Through collective action and innovative solutions, we can strengthen our energy infrastructure and security, ensuring a safe and sustainable energy future in the ASEAN region. Let us move forward together, committed to achieving common goals for the benefit of all member countries,” concluded Nicke.

Apart from Pertamina, ASCOPE participating countries also submitted plans and business development in their respective countries to support APAEC’s achievements. Several participating countries also opened up the potential for bilateral cooperation to optimize regional energy business development.

ASCOPE Secretary In Charge (ASIC) as head of ASCOPE’s secretariat, held by Tran Hong Nam, from Vietnam, appreciates this discussion forum for company leaders which can encourage collaborative initiatives and facilitate knowledge exchange, which is of strategic importance to overcome the various challenges facing the sector. energy in ASEAN.

“I hope that the participants in today’s leadership forum can share new perspectives in the development of APAEC where ASEAN national oil companies share the relevance and understanding of the landscape of our energy sector in the future,” added Tran. (ATN)
