Indonesia and ASEAN Countries Agree to Strengthen Defense Cooperation

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia and countries in Southeast Asia have agreed to continue working together to advance regional prosperity, including strengthening defense cooperation.

In this context, the Minister of Defense who is also the President-elect of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto met the President of Brunei Darussalam, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah in Bandar Seri Begawan, Thursday, September 5 2024. The meeting took place in the Ratna Kencana Audience room, Nurul Iman Palace.

The two parties discussed various strategic issues to strengthen bilateral relations and defense cooperation between the two countries.

Prabowo said at the meeting that Indonesia wanted to explore opportunities for cooperation with Brunei in the defense industry sector.

“I am confident that by sharing technology and expertise, we can work together to develop defense systems and equipment that meet our specific needs,” said Prabowo, quoted on Saturday, September 7 2024.

There was a discussion regarding educational cooperation where Prabowo expressed his hope of welcoming more Brunei military personnel to continue their studies in Indonesia in the future. The Indonesian Ministry of Defense is currently transforming The Republic of Indonesia Defense University (RIDU) into a world-class, research-oriented institution.

“We are pleased to invite Brunei Armed Forces officers to enroll in the master’s program offered at RIDU,” explained Prabowo.

Brunei had previously sent one officer, who graduated in 2014. To date, the university has accepted international students from various countries including Australia, the Philippines, China, Malaysia, Nigeria, Laos and others. Several programs are available for Bruneian officers, including Defense Management, Asymmetric Warfare, and Defense Diplomacy.

Apart from the President of Brunei, Prabowo also held a meeting with the Prime Minister (PM) of Cambodia H.E. Mr Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet and Cambodian Senate President H.E. Mr Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen in Cambodia, Friday, September 6 2024.

In his meeting with PM Hun Manet, Prabowo expressed confidence that Indonesia and Cambodia could work closely together to try to advance the regional prosperity and progress of the two countries.

“By strengthening our collaboration, we can make a significant contribution to the prosperity and development of ASEAN as a whole. “I hope for our continued partnership in achieving this common goal,” said Prabowo.

Meanwhile, when meeting with the President of the Cambodian Senate, Hun Sen, Prabowo expressed his deepest appreciation to the Cambodian Ministry of Defense for its ongoing commitment to strengthening defense cooperation with Indonesia.

“Going forward it is very important for both countries to actively seek and explore new opportunities for collaboration, ensuring that our partnership remains strong and responsive to emerging challenges and opportunities,” said Prabowo. (AT Network)
