Causes of Landslides

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG), Geological Agency of the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources stated, based on analysis of secondary data available at the Geological Agency, in general the disaster location is estimated to be undulating hills with rather steep slopes. The height of the ground movement location is estimated to be 685 meters above.

“The ground movement that occurred on Thursday, September 26 2024 at around 17.00 WIB at the ex-illegal gold mining location in Nagari Sungai Abu, Hiliran Gumanti District, Solok Regency, West Sumatra Province occurred after long and high intensity rain,” said Head of PVMBG, Hadi Wijaya in Bandung, Saturday, September 28 2024.

Based on the Forecast Map for Ground Movements in September 2024 in Solok Regency, West Sumatra Province (Geological Agency, Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation), the disaster location is included in the potential for Medium ground movement.

“This zone can be interpreted as having the potential for debris flow and ground movement/landslides, especially in areas bordering river valleys, escarpments, road cliffs or if slopes are disturbed. Old ground movements can become active again due to high rainfall and strong erosion. ” explained Hadi.

Meanwhile, based on the West Sumatra Province Land Movement Vulnerability Zone map, the disaster location is estimated to be included in the Medium – Low Land Movement Vulnerability Zone. And areas in this category, according to Hadi, have a proportion of ground movement incidents that is greater than 15% to 30% of the total population of incidents.

In this zone, medium ground movements can occur, especially in areas bordering river valleys, escarpments/steep slopes, road cutting cliffs and on disturbed slopes. Old and new ground movements can occur or become active again if triggered by high rainfall and/or earthquakes.

Apart from being triggered by high rainfall, another cause of ground movement, Hadi continued, is the result of excavation of slopes at angles that are too steep or without adequate support so that when heavy rain falls, water seeps into the cracks or fissures on the slope, increasing pore water pressure. pressure), which causes the soil to lose stability and landslide.

Apart from excavation, other causes, Hadi continued, are underground/stone/vein excavation/creating cavities/slope excavation causing slope collapse and mining that occurs in the affected area does not have a good drainage system so that rainwater collects in the excavation area and mine slopes, causing dissolution. soil particles that speed up the erosion process.

“Water retained on the ground surface also adds load to the slope, which can trigger soil movement,” continued Hadi. (AT Network)
