ASIATODAY.ID, WASHINGTON – United States (US) President Joe Biden expressed his support for Indonesia’s efforts to accelerate membership accession to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
Biden’s support is stated in the Joint Statement by the President of the US and the President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto, which was published by the US White House via the whitehouse.gov page which was accessed Wednesday, November 13 2024 local time.
“President Biden expressed his support for Indonesia’s efforts to accelerate efforts to join the OECD, which provides a path to faster and quality economic growth through stronger and more accountable policies,” the statement said.
As the accession process progresses, Biden hopes the US can work with the Indonesian government to ensure its success in aligning with OECD standards and best practices. This includes supporting Indonesia in carrying out all necessary economic, governance, trade and employment reforms.
Furthermore, Biden and Prabowo also expressed their commitment to a rules-based international trading system and recognized the importance of multilateral institutions and norms that encourage free and fair trade.
“The two leaders pledged to advance dialogue and consultation in resolving WTO disputes,” he explained.
In addition, Prabowo and Biden acknowledged the important role of diverse and resilient critical mineral supply chains to support the manufacturing sector and economic growth in both countries, as well as support the global clean energy transition.
In this regard, the two countries emphasized their commitment to developing the supply chain for important minerals to Indonesia and the US. This is done through mutually beneficial partnerships that prioritize sustainable development principles, including strong environmental and labor standards.
