Indonesia is Getting Closer to Joining the OECD

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia is currently an accession country to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) together with Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Peru, Romania and Thailand.

Indonesia is in the process of self-assessment of national policies, regulations and standards compared to OECD instruments, to be further submitted in the Initial Memorandum document.

In connection with the accession process, Secretary General Mathias Cormann returned to Indonesia on a working visit on 25–28 November 2024. During this visit, Cormann also attended a luncheon with the Coordinating Minister for the Indonesian Economy, Airlangga Hartarto, Wednesday, 27 November 2024.

The warm meeting discussed developments in the Indonesian economy, including the focus of President Prabowo Subianto’s government, as well as discussing developments in Indonesia’s membership process at the OECD.

“I want to thank you because yesterday the OECD launched the Indonesia Report. I have reported most of the issues to the President. And of course, hopefully some points, some lines are in line with the Government’s planning, including the roadmap for green energy. “And then it is also in line with energy securities, as well as food security programs, including free nutritious food which is also a priority,” said Airlangga.

Furthermore, Airlangga also mentioned that currently Indonesia continues to intensively carry out reforms in various sectors carried out by a number of related ministries to adapt to OECD standards.

Apart from that, with these various reforms, the relevant ministries will also adjust their budgets and structures, so that the OECD task force will also immediately make structural adjustments regarding this matter.

Responding to the remarks delivered by Airlangga, Cormann again explained that the accession process would bring benefits to Indonesia and the OECD. The OECD will learn a lot in new sectors, one of which is the digital economy where Indonesia is a pioneer through the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement.

Furthermore, Cormann also hopes that Indonesia’s current OECD membership efforts can support the achievement of its vision to become a developed country with a high-income economy by 2045.

“I believe that together we can work to support Indonesia to become even better. The accession process covers a broad spectrum of economic, social and environmental policies. And this process focuses on identifying policy best practices. Global best practices are based on what has worked before,” said Cormann.

Previously, Cormann also attended the launch of The OECD Economic Survey of Indonesia 2024 on 26 November 2024. The OECD Economic Survey is the OECD’s flagship regular publication carried out through policy dialogue between the OECD and policymakers from developed and developing countries, including Indonesia.
