ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Qatar and Abu Dhabi are reportedly ready to build 7 million housing units for the Indonesian people.
“Information from President Prabowo Subianto is that the Qatari government is willing to finance 5 million housing units. There is also a benefactor from Qatar who will personally help with 1 million housing units. I also visited Abu Dhabi and the Abu Dhabi government stated that it would help with 1 million housing units. So “These two countries are willing to finance 7 million housing units,” said the Chair of the Indonesian Housing Task Force, Hashim Djojohadikusumo while attending the 2024 Christmas Social Service event with the Indonesian Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas, Maruarar Sirait at the Rawa Buaya Flats, Jakarta, Thursday, December 26 2024.
Hashim is optimistic that the target of building 15 million housing units for the Indonesian people within 5 years of President Prabowo’s government will be achieved.
Explore Collaboration with the World Bank
The Indonesian Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas, Maruarar Sirait, was previously exploring collaboration with the World Bank to fund the 3 million house program.
This step was taken because the State Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBN) was deemed unable to finance President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship program.
“If we only relied on the APBN, we would only be able to build 257 thousand houses,” he said.
On the other hand, the World Bank assesses that the Indonesian Government needs to collaborate with various parties to encourage the sustainability of Prabowo Subianto’s priority program. This is because the realization of the 3 million house program is considered insufficient if it only relies on the government and public sector budget.
Country Director for Indonesia and Timor-Leste, East Asia and Pacific World Bank Carolyn Turk assesses that the 3 million house program needs to involve all stakeholders, both public and private sectors. Apart from that, Carolyn said the government also needs to involve international business players.
“We believe it is very important to use all of these elements, because the 3 million houses program is a very extraordinary program and cannot be carried out only by the public sector or government,” explained Carolyn in her written statement, Sunday, December 15 2024.
He said the World Bank is ready to provide capital services in the form of debt. The World Bank also provides analytical work to resolve and consolidate data issues, including collection, assessment, and formulation of relevant questions to answer program problems.
“This analytical work also includes the preparation and determination of targets and beneficiaries of this program. Apart from that, it is also analytical in preparing the system, because when there is a decentralization process which also involves regional governments, there is a system for monitoring and evaluation processes in its implementation ,” he said.
