ASIATODAY.ID, DENPASAR — A sudden power blackout in Bali struck on Friday, May 2, 2025, at 4:00 PM local time, causing widespread disruption across various sectors. As of Friday afternoon, electricity across the island remains out, significantly affecting the daily activities of both residents and tourists.
A blackout, or total power outage, is a situation where the supply of electricity in a large area is completely cut off for an extended period. Unlike rolling blackouts or localized outages, a blackout usually stems from major disruptions in main transmission systems or widespread generator failures. The effects of a blackout can paralyze numerous public services, transportation networks, and digital communications.
Reports from the ground indicate that the Bali power outage has disabled digital transactions at numerous businesses, including restaurants and tourist service outlets.
“Restaurant transactions were chaotic because we couldn’t process payments. It was the same at tattoo shops—customers wanted to pay by credit card, but there was no signal,” said one tourist on Friday, May 2, 2025.
In addition to payment systems, the blackout in Bali has also crippled traffic management, as traffic lights at intersections stopped functioning.
“Roads became jammed because the traffic lights went out,” said Reza, a local resident of Denpasar.
As of this report, the Bali blackout has lasted over 90 minutes with no clear timeline for restoration. State electricity company PT PLN (Persero) Bali Region stated that the main cause of the disruption was a failure in the subsea cable that connects the Java and Bali power grids.
“The Java–Bali subsea transmission cable experienced a fault, causing all power plants to trip offline. We apologize for the inconvenience. Our focus is currently on restoring the system before we can normalize the load,” PLN Bali stated in an official release on Friday, May 2, 2025.
PLN Bali continues working to accelerate the recovery process so that normal activities can resume. The public is advised to remain calm and minimize the use of electrical devices during the restoration period. (AT Network)
