ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – A major surprise hit President Prabowo Subianto’s cabinet. Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati has officially resigned from her post, closing a nearly two-decade career shaping Indonesia’s fiscal policies across three different presidencies.
The announcement was made during the handover ceremony at the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday, Sept 9, 2025, where Sri Mulyani formally passed the baton to Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, inaugurated by President Prabowo the day before.
“I bid farewell and kindly ask that from now on my privacy as an ordinary citizen be respected,” Sri Mulyani said with emotion.
A Heartfelt Farewell: “Never Stop Loving Indonesia”
In her parting message, Sri Mulyani humbly apologized for any shortcomings during her tenure. She congratulated Purbaya and urged all ministry staff to continue upholding integrity, competence, and dedication in managing state finances.
“Carry out your duties with integrity, competence, and dedication. Never grow weary of loving Indonesia,” she emphasized.
The farewell moment was met with tears and applause from ministry officials who had long served under her leadership.
Sri Mulyani’s Remarkable Career Journey
Sri Mulyani is no stranger to both Indonesian and global economic arenas. Her illustrious career includes:
2005–2010: Finance Minister under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
2010–2016: Managing Director of the World Bank — the first Indonesian woman to hold such a prestigious position.
2016–2024: Finance Minister under President Joko Widodo.
2024–2025: Reappointed as Finance Minister by President Prabowo Subianto.
During her leadership, she introduced landmark policies such as the tax amnesty program, the Core Tax system, and crucial budgetary measures to mitigate the Covid-19 pandemic.
Heading Back to the World Bank?
With her exit from public office, speculation arises: Will Sri Mulyani return to the World Bank or another global institution? Given her international reputation, the possibility remains wide open. However, she has so far remained silent about her next steps.
What is certain: her departure leaves an indelible mark on Indonesia’s economic history. Born in Bandar Lampung on August 26, 1962, Sri Mulyani will be remembered as a trailblazer who elevated Indonesia’s standing in the global financial stage. (AT Network)
