ASIATODAY.ID, NEW YORK – Indonesia once again demonstrated its global leadership in humanitarian diplomacy.
At the High-Level Conference on the Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar, held on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, September 30, 2025, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Sugiono, called for stronger international solidarity and concrete action to resolve the ongoing Rohingya crisis.
“The Rohingya tragedy cannot be separated from the broader political crisis in Myanmar. A comprehensive solution can only be achieved by addressing the root causes through inclusive dialogue, in line with the Five-Point Consensus,” Minister Sugiono emphasized in his address.
He also raised concern over the increasing exploitation of the Rohingya people by transnational criminal networks, including human trafficking and people smuggling. Indonesia, he stressed, will take firm action against these networks but underscored that no country can face the challenge alone.
“No nation can solve this issue single-handedly. ASEAN and the Bali Process must continue to be strengthened as regional platforms to tackle irregular migration and protect vulnerable communities,” he stated.
Minister Sugiono further urged enhanced coordination with key international organizations such as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Such cooperation, he said, is crucial to provide sustainable support to countries hosting refugees.
Specifically, Indonesia called on State Parties to the 1951 Refugee Convention, particularly developed nations, to expand their resettlement programs and open more pathways for Rohingya refugees to third countries.
“For eight years, the Rohingya refugees have lived in uncertainty. We must not allow this to become a decade of despair. The international community must share the responsibility,” Minister Sugiono concluded.
The High-Level Conference on the Rohingya Crisis was convened under the mandate of UNGA Resolution 79/182. It aims to mobilize political support and formulate concrete, innovative, and measurable action plans that prioritize human rights protection and pave the way for safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation of the Rohingya people.
