ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesia, through the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), presented the results of its nuclear safety implementation study for a prospective nuclear power plant (NPP) site at the International Conference on Resilience of Nuclear Installations against External Events from a Safety Perspective (NIRC–2025), organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at the Vienna International Centre, Austria, from 20 to 24 October 2025.
Indonesia was represented by Khusnul Khotimah, a researcher from the Research Center for Nuclear Safety Technology, Metrology, and Quality (PRTKMMN) under the Nuclear Energy Research Organization (ORTN) of BRIN, who was selected as an official IAEA grantee through a competitive process.
During the session “Issues in Site Selection and Innovative Solutions (II)”, Khusnul presented a study on the application of the HIRADC (Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Determining Control) method to evaluate the safety of coastal candidate sites for Indonesia’s future NPP.
“This approach is highly relevant to Indonesia’s geographical conditions, which are prone to natural hazards such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and coastal flooding,” she explained quoted on October 31, 2025.
The conference gathered 374 participants from 70 IAEA Member States and nine international organizations, bringing together regulators, researchers, academics, and industry representatives to discuss updated methodologies and safety standards, including SSR-1, SSG-9, SSG-18, and SSG-68, which serve as key international references for future NPP site assessment.
Over five days, participants engaged in plenary discussions, technical panels, poster sessions, and a technical visit to the IAEA Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC), gaining insights into the latest developments in nuclear safety resilience and emergency preparedness.
Through its participation, BRIN strengthened international collaboration with institutions such as IAEA, KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute), and JAEA (Japan Atomic Energy Agency) in areas including external event safety assessment, resilience modeling, and coastal site risk management.
BRIN emphasized that this engagement represents an important step in enhancing Indonesia’s preparedness for safe, globally compliant nuclear power development. Insights gained from the conference will be followed up through internal knowledge-sharing programs and the development of science-based policy recommendations to support national NPP planning.
BRIN’s participation in the IAEA 2025 conference reaffirms Indonesia’s commitment to the safe, reliable, and sustainable use of nuclear energy, aligned with the nation’s goal of achieving a low-carbon energy transition. (AT Network)
