ASIATODAY.ID, BUSAN – U.S. President Donald Trump described his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the APEC Summit in Busan, South Korea, on Thursday, October 30, 2025, as a significant step toward “everlasting peace” between the two nations.
The meeting marked the first encounter between the two leaders in six years, following their last talks at the G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan, in 2019. Both sides announced a breakthrough agreement aimed at resolving long-standing trade frictions that have strained U.S.–China relations for years.
Beijing confirmed that the two leaders reached a “major consensus” on key trade issues. China agreed to suspend its recent rare-earth export restrictions in exchange for U.S. tariff reductions on Chinese imports.
Under the new deal, Washington will lower tariffs on Chinese products from 57% to 47% and suspend investigations into Beijing’s maritime and logistics sectors.
The U.S. will also ease tariffs related to fentanyl, while China adjusts its retaliatory measures accordingly.
“My G2 meeting with President Xi of China was a great one for both of our countries,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Saturday, November 1, 2025.
“This meeting will lead to everlasting peace and success. God bless both China and the USA!” he added.
Beijing also announced that it would lift its rare-earth export restrictions for one year while reassessing its long-term strategy. Rare-earth elements are crucial materials for electronics and military technologies, and had been restricted following U.S. export controls on advanced semiconductors and chipmaking equipment.
Additionally, China agreed to resume purchases of U.S. soybeans and other agricultural products, which had been halted during the recent trade standoff.
Prabowo’s Response
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto welcomed the outcome of the Trump–Xi meeting, expressing optimism about its impact on global stability.
“Alhamdulillah, President Trump from America met with President Xi Jinping. I heard the atmosphere was positive,” Prabowo told reporters during the APEC Summit in South Korea on Friday, October 31, 2025.
“This is what we hope for, as it will greatly influence global stability. The world economy depends heavily on peace and calm,” he added.
During the meeting, Xi Jinping praised Trump’s contributions to international peace efforts, including his role in achieving a ceasefire in Gaza and facilitating a peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand signed on October 26, 2025.
“The world today faces many difficult challenges. China and the United States must shoulder our responsibilities as major nations and work together for the good of both countries and the world,” Xi said.
He emphasized that differences between the two countries were natural but should not derail cooperation.
“In facing winds, waves, and challenges, you and I as captains of the U.S.–China relationship must ensure this great ship stays on the right course and sails forward steadily,” Xi remarked.
The Busan meeting signals a positive shift in U.S.–China relations, offering hope for renewed cooperation between the world’s two largest economies and greater global economic stability in the years ahead. (AT Network)
