ASIATODAY.ID, YANGON — The Indonesian government has launched a large-scale evacuation of its citizens trapped in the recent crackdown on online scam and online gambling centers in Kayin State, Myanmar.
Escalating instability in the Myawaddy border region has pushed Indonesian authorities to accelerate every stage of the repatriation effort to ensure the safety of all affected nationals.
During an intensive field operation conducted on 4–8 December 2025, a team from the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon deployed directly to Shwe Kokko to collect biometric data from the stranded Indonesian citizens.
As a result, more than 200 Indonesians have been successfully recorded for the issuance of Emergency Travel Documents—temporary documents required to replace lost, confiscated, or expired passports. This process was carried out in close cooperation with Myanmar authorities to expedite repatriation requirements.
The evacuation continues with the second batch scheduled for December 12, 2025, involving 54 Indonesians holding valid passports who have secured cross-border clearance from both Myanmar and Thai authorities.
They will be transported overland to Mae Sot, Thailand, before flying back to Indonesia in the early hours of 13 December.
This effort follows the success of the first evacuation wave, which safely repatriated 56 Indonesian citizens on December 9, 2025.
Indonesian Embassy in Yangon emphasized that coordination remains intensive with Myanmar authorities, Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok, and relevant ministries and agencies in Jakarta. Local partners on the ground are also mobilized to ensure that every stage of the evacuation proceeds safely, orderly, and in line with Indonesia’s citizen protection protocols.
The embassy stressed that the repatriation process will continue in phases, taking into account fluctuating security conditions in Myawaddy, the readiness of travel documents, and border-crossing capacity.
Amid Myanmar’s volatile situation, the Indonesian government has made its stance clear: bringing its citizens home safely is an absolute priority, and every effort is being deployed to ensure a secure and efficient evacuation. (AT Network)
