ASIATODAY.ID, GENEVA – Indonesia has been officially selected by member states of the Asia-Pacific Group (APG) to be nominated for the Presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for 2026, following a decision reached on December 23, 2025.

The nomination reflects the strong confidence of Asia-Pacific countries in Indonesia’s role and leadership in advancing the global human rights agenda.

The nomination for the 2026 UN Human Rights Council President will be formally endorsed at the Human Rights Council meeting on January 8, 2026.

The position is set to be held by Ambassador Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations in Geneva.

In this capacity, Indonesia will preside over the Council’s sessions and processes throughout 2026, ensuring proceedings are conducted in an objective, inclusive, and balanced manner.

Indonesia is currently serving as a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2024–2026 term. Under the established regional rotation mechanism, the Asia-Pacific Group is entitled to hold the Council’s presidency during the 20th cycle in 2026, making Indonesia’s nomination fully consistent with agreed regional arrangements.

Broad support from Asia-Pacific countries is underpinned by Indonesia’s longstanding reputation as a bridge builder on human rights issues, its position as an independent developing country not aligned with any particular geopolitical bloc, and its consistent commitment to promoting humanitarian principles across various regions of the world.

Indonesia’s nomination as UNHRC President further strengthens the country’s human rights diplomacy profile and underscores its growing leadership on the international stage.

Indonesia’s presidency in 2026 will also coincide with the 20th anniversary of the UN Human Rights Council, offering a strategic opportunity to promote stronger international human rights governance that is more inclusive, constructive, and oriented toward dialogue and cooperation.

The Government of the Republic of Indonesia has expressed its deep appreciation and gratitude to all Asia-Pacific Group member states for their trust and support.

Indonesia has reaffirmed its commitment to carrying out this mandate professionally, transparently, and in the spirit of multilateral cooperation, with the aim of advancing and protecting human rights for all. (AT Network)
