Beijing Takes Credit for Cooling India–Pakistan War Scare

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi meets with Pakistani Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar. Special

ASIATODAY.ID, BEIJING – China has claimed it played a behind-the-scenes role in defusing a dangerous military confrontation between India and Pakistan in May, as Beijing positions itself as an emerging power broker in regional and global conflicts.

The four-day standoff between the nuclear-armed South Asian rivals, which lasted from May 7 to May 10, ended with a ceasefire.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing actively mediated during the crisis, describing the confrontation as one of several global “hotspot issues” China has sought to calm.

Speaking at a symposium titled “International Situation and China’s Foreign Relations,” Wang said China has adopted what he called an “objective and just stance” in conflict mediation, focusing on both immediate tensions and their underlying causes.

“Following the Chinese approach to settling hotspot issues, we mediated in northern Myanmar, the Iranian nuclear issue, the tensions between Pakistan and India, the issues between Palestine and Israel, and the recent conflict between Cambodia and Thailand,” Wang was quoted as saying by PTI news agency on December 31, 2025.

According to Wang, China engaged both New Delhi and Islamabad shortly before the ceasefire was announced.

He held a phone call with Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, urging both sides to exercise restraint and resolve their differences through “dialogue and consultation.”

On the same day, Wang also spoke with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, expressing Beijing’s support for an early ceasefire. Once achieved, Wang stressed, the truce must be jointly upheld to prevent renewed hostilities.

“This serves the interests of both Pakistan and India, contributes to regional peace and stability, and meets the common expectations of the international community,” Wang said, adding that China was willing to “continue playing a positive role.”

China’s claims come amid competing narratives over how the ceasefire was reached. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly asserted that Washington helped broker the truce by threatening to reduce trade with both countries.

New Delhi has rejected those claims, insisting the ceasefire resulted from direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan.

Beijing’s statement underscores its broader diplomatic push to present itself as an alternative mediator to the West, particularly in regions marked by long-standing rivalries and geopolitical flashpoints. (RT)
