ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Prosecutors from the West Jakarta District Attorney’s Office have sought the death penalty for two Malaysian nationals accused in a major narcotics trafficking case.
The demand was delivered during a court hearing at the West Jakarta District Court on March 9, 2026.
The defendants, Adam Haziq bin Willi and Mohd Daniel Ikwan Maula bin Mohd Nur Iskandar Syah Abdullah, are charged with involvement in an illegal narcotics transaction involving Category I drugs in non-plant form exceeding five grams.
In their indictment, prosecutors argued that the defendants were legally and convincingly proven to have committed the criminal offense of attempt or criminal conspiracy to unlawfully receive and act as intermediaries in the sale and distribution of Category I narcotics.
The charges fall under Article 114 paragraph (2) in conjunction with Article 132 paragraph (1) of Indonesia’s Law No. 35 of 2009 on Narcotics, together with Article 3 paragraph (1) of Law No. 1 of 2023 on the Criminal Code, and Law No. 1 of 2026 concerning Criminal Penalty Adjustments.
Based on these provisions, prosecutors requested that the panel of judges impose the death penalty on both defendants, as stated in the primary indictment.
The prosecution marks the first death penalty demand in 2026 within the jurisdiction of the Jakarta High Prosecutor’s Office involving foreign nationals in a narcotics case.
During the hearing, West Jakarta District Attorney Dr. Nurul Wahida Rifal attended the proceedings to provide supervision and institutional support. Her presence underscored the prosecution service’s commitment to ensuring that the case is handled professionally, objectively, and in accordance with Indonesian law.
Prosecutors also indicated that the involvement of foreign nationals suggests links to an international drug trafficking network seeking to distribute narcotics within Indonesia, posing a serious threat to the country’s younger generation.
The trial will continue with the defense pleadings (pledoi) from the defendants and their legal counsel, in accordance with Indonesian criminal procedure. (AT Network)
