ASIATODAY.ID, BATAM — Indonesian authorities have foiled an alleged attempt to smuggle rare earth minerals through Batam, Riau Islands, in a major operation involving the Forest Area Enforcement Task Force (Satgas PKH), the Indonesian Navy, and the Attorney General’s Office.
Dozens of containers carrying strategic minerals reportedly containing radioactive elements are now at the center of an expanding investigation into suspected illegal exports of Indonesia’s critical natural resources.
The inspection took place at Kodaeral IV Port in Batam on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. During the operation, officers opened 15 out of 25 containers to verify the cargo against export and shipping documents.
The operation was directly overseen by Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes Febrie Adriansyah, who serves as Chief Executive of the Satgas PKH, alongside Lieutenant General Richard Tampubolon, Chief of General Staff of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, acting as Deputy Chief Executive I of the task force.
Anang Supriatna, Head of the Legal Information Center at the Attorney General’s Office, stated that the inspection was launched after the task force received a report from Indonesian Navy investigators regarding the interception of a mineral-carrying vessel on May 17, 2026.
According to authorities, the joint operation forms part of Indonesia’s broader effort to tighten oversight of strategic natural resources and prevent illegal exports that could undermine national interests.
Satgas PKH spokesperson Barita Simanjuntak said investigators had uncovered evidence indicating potential serious legal violations.
“There are strong indications of violations involving mandatory export documentation. Several items are also suspected of falling under restricted or prohibited export categories,” he said.
The findings could lead to investigations into corruption, abuse of authority, and document forgery linked to the export of strategic minerals.
The case has attracted significant attention because rare earth minerals are considered highly valuable commodities essential for electric vehicles, advanced technologies, renewable energy industries, and modern defense systems. Indonesia is known to possess substantial rare earth potential, making the sector increasingly strategic amid intensifying global competition for critical minerals.
The Attorney General’s Office confirmed that special crime investigators would continue probing the case to identify parties allegedly involved in the attempted smuggling network.
