There was no tsunami warning issued by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) due to this earthquake.

It was reported that the earthquake occurred at coordinates 6.31 South Latitude and 129.77 East Longitude. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea 251 km northwest of Tanimbar.

This earthquake had a depth of 10 kilometers and was felt in Saumlaki, Banda, Ambon, Damer and Kisar.

“Be careful of possible aftershocks,” wrote BMKG.

So far, there have been no reports of damage due to the earthquake.

Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Daryono said, by paying attention to the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake due to rock (earth’s crust) deformation activity at the bottom of the Banda Sea.

The results of the source mechanism analysis show that the earthquake has a shear movement mechanism.

“Sea level monitoring results show that this earthquake triggered a minor tsunami which was observed in Damer with a height of 39 cm, in Banda 8 cm,” said Daryono.

BMKG appeal

BMKG urges the public to remain calm and not be influenced by issues whose truth cannot be justified. BMKG also provides recommendations for people to stay away from places or buildings that are cracked or damaged due to the earthquake.

“Check and make sure the building where you live is earthquake resistant enough, or that there is no damage due to earthquake vibrations that endangers the stability of the building before you return to the house,” explained Daryono. (AT Network)
