“Mount Dukono is still active as of this morning, earthquakes, explosions, and booming sounds can still be heard. It is hoped that people will remain calm and carry out their activities as usual. The eruption is still ongoing while the report is being prepared,” said Head of PVMBG Hendra Gunawan in Bandung, Saturday, November 19 2023.

Hendra explained that currently Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert) status, therefore PVMBG recommends that people around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists refrain from activities, climbing and approaching the Malupang Warirang Crater within a radius of 2 kilometers.

Considering that eruptions with volcanic ash periodically still occur and spread in the direction of the wind, the Geological Agency recommends that people around Mount Dukono always provide masks/nose and mouth coverings to use when needed to avoid the threat of volcanic ash on the respiratory system.

Mount Dukono is located on Halmahera Island, northern Indonesia. Halmahera itself is one of the islands in the Maluku Islands, which is part of Indonesia. The geographical coordinates of Mount Dukono are around 1.68 degrees north latitude and 127.88 degrees east longitude.

This mountain with a height of 1087 meters above sea level is included in the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for its level of tectonic activity and the presence of many active volcanoes. Mount Dukono is known as one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. (AT Network)
