G7 Condemns North Korea’s Launch of Intercontinental Ballistic Missile

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – G7 countries starting from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States and the High Representative of the European Union, strongly condemned the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) by North Korea on December 18 2023.

This ICBM launch follows four previous ICBM launches this year as well as other launches using ballistic missile technology.

North Korea continues to enhance its unlawful nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities and increase its destabilizing activities.

“We reiterate our call for complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and demand that North Korea abandon all its nuclear weapons, existing nuclear programs, and all existing weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and other ballistic missile programs in a complete, verifiable and non-existent manner. can be changed. in a manner consistent with all relevant UN Security Council Resolutions (UNSCR). We regret North Korea’s choice to prioritize unlawful WMD and ballistic missile programs over the welfare of the people in North Korea,” said the G7’s statement, quoted from a press release, Thursday, December 20 2023.

According to the G7, North Korea’s repeated reckless actions must be met with a swift, united and strong international response, in particular by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

“We urge UNSC Members to follow through on their commitments and call on all UN Member States to implement the UNSC fully and effectively. In this context, we are deeply concerned about the potential transfer of nuclear or ballistic missile technology to North Korea, which would further threaten the peace and stability of the region and the entire world, and seriously undermine global non-governmental commitments. -a proliferation regime that we all appreciate and contributes greatly to our collective security. We also reiterate our strong condemnation of arms transfers from North Korea to Russia, which directly violate relevant UNSC provisions.

“We urge North Korea and Russia to comply with relevant UN Security Council Resolutions and immediately cease all such activities. We continue to call on North Korea to engage in meaningful diplomacy and accept the offer of dialogue without preconditions repeatedly made by Japan, the United States and the Republic of Korea.”

The G7 remains committed to working with all relevant partners towards the goal of peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and upholding an international order based on the rule of law. (AT Network)
