Indonesia Supports South Africa’s Steps to Sue Israel at the ICJ

Defending Palestine Action in Jakarta. Doc

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia stated that the Indonesian Government morally and politically supports South Africa’s legal efforts at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding Israel’s lawsuit against genocide in the Gaza Strip, Palestine.

This was confirmed by the spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lalu Muhammad Iqbal.

“Morally and politically, Indonesia fully supports it. However, legally Indonesia cannot take part in the lawsuit because the basis of the lawsuit is the Genocide Convention to which Indonesia is not a party,” he said, quoted Saturday, January 13 2024.

It was said that the UN General Assembly had requested an advisory opinion from the International Court regarding the “status and legal consequences” of Israel’s occupation of Palestine, starting December 30, 2022.

“In this regard, on February 19 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs is scheduled to appear to deliver an oral statement before the International Court of Justice to encourage the Court to provide an advisory opinion as requested by the UN General Assembly,” he said.

Indonesian Foreign Minister, Retno Marsudi, had previously emphasized that Indonesia would take other means to defend the Palestinian people, including by providing arguments before the UN General Assembly and the ICJ.

“This question from the General Assembly allows Indonesia to provide an opinion regarding Israel’s actions before the ICJ,” said Retno.

Meanwhile, Retno emphasized that Indonesia would take whatever methods it had been able to use to fight for the Palestinian people.

“So these are two separate things. The path that South Africa is taking and the path that is being pursued based on questions from the General Assembly to the ICJ, where it is possible for Indonesia to attend and provide an opinion, that is where we will enter,” he added.

As is known, the trial of the lawsuit against Israel was held on January 11-12 2024. South Africa filed a lawsuit with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for violating the 1948 Genocide Convention.

Officially, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has also expressed its support for South Africa’s move. Even so, the United States views South Africa’s lawsuit against Israel as a futile act.

Action to Defend Palestine in Front of the American Embassy

Meanwhile, an action to defend Palestine was held in front of the United States Embassy, Central Jakarta, Saturday, January 13 2024 morning.

In their action, they called for “Free Free Palestine” and demanded that Israel stop its actions. Apart from that, their demands also include that Israel immediately leave the Indonesian Hospital and not use it as a troop headquarters.

The Defend Palestine action in front of the US Embassy, Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, Central Jakarta, is part of the action of millions of humanitarian activists on the Global Day of Action for Gaza or Global Protest Action which was held in 100 cities throughout the world, calling for an end to the genocide in Gaza, Palestine .

The continuing genocide and genocide under Israeli occupation has claimed the lives of more than 23,000 Palestinians. The food and medical aid crisis in Gaza is further exacerbating an already difficult situation.

Therefore, the international community from more than 50 countries, together with London, England, as the initiator, simultaneously implemented the Global Day of Action for Gaza by holding demonstrations on the streets throughout the world. (AT Network)
