ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Thousands of Israelis demonstrated in a number of cities on Saturday, January 27 2024. They demanded that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu resign from office.

Yedioth Ahronoth daily reports, thousands of Israelis held protests in a number of cities, starting from Haifa, Caesarea, Kefar Sava, Rehovot and Beersheba.

In the city of Haifa, at the Horev intersection, residents are clamoring for immediate general elections.

“Demonstrations started from the Carmel area of Haifa City to the center of the protest at the Horev intersection,” Yedioth Ahronoth reported.

Meanwhile, in Kefar Sava City, hundreds of people were also seen demonstrating under the slogan ‘Elections Now’. They demanded Netanyahu’s ouster and the start of elections as soon as possible.

Demonstrations with similar demands were also seen in the city of Ra’anana, where hundreds of people urged Netanyahu to step down immediately.

Since launching his aggression on Gaza in early October, Netanyahu has continued to be criticized for failing to free the hostages and ensure their safety while they were being held by Hamas.

Around 130 people are still being held hostage by Hamas. The families of the hostages have repeatedly demonstrated, urging the Israeli government to release them.

Protests from the hostage’s family often take place in front of Netanyahu’s residence in Caesarea.

According to Yedioth Ahronoth’s report, relatives of the hostages have been demonstrating there for two weeks in a row.

Not only that, protests also came from former high-ranking Israeli national security officials.

Dozens of former senior national security officials, scientists and prominent Israeli businesspeople sent a letter to Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana on Thursday, January 26 2024 demanding that Netanyahu be removed from office.

In the letter, they criticized Netanyahu’s decision to overhaul Israel’s justice system. They consider the overhaul of the justice system to result in weaknesses in the state security system.

This weakness also had an impact on the Hamas attack last October 7. Israel’s own elections are planned to be held in 2026.

In an opinion poll released this week by Channel 13, Netanyahu’s Likud party would be in second place if elections were held now.

Meanwhile, the first place is held by the National Unity Party led by former IDF chief of staff Benny Gantz. He is currently a member of Netanyahu’s war cabinet. (ATN)
