ASIATODAY.ID, KOGOSHIMA – The volcano in Sakurajima, Kagoshima prefecture, southwest Japan, erupted on Wednesday, with the plume reaching 5,000 meters above the summit crater for the first time since 2020, according to the local weather observatory.

The eruption occurred in the Minamidake crater at 6.33 local time, and this is the first time the eruption reached 5,000 meters since August 9 2020, when an eruption occurred in the same crater.

The eruption sent rocks flying as far as 1,000 to 1,300 meters but no pyroclastic flows were produced, according to the local weather office.

The Japan Meteorological Agency estimates that volcanic ash will fall in several parts of Kumamoto, Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures.

Large waves on the mountain detected on Tuesday evening had subsided due to the eruption, the office said.

There have been no reports of injuries or damaged buildings, according to the prefectural government, while the Kagoshima Meteorological Office said the volcanic activity alert level was at level three, and urged the public not to approach the volcano. (KYODO)
