ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia and China support Palestine becoming a full member of the United Nations (UN).
This was conveyed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, Retno Marsudi after holding a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, Wang Yi in Jakarta, Thursday, April 18 2024.
The conflict in Gaza was one of the main topics in bilateral discussions between the two senior diplomats.
“As stated by Minister Wang Yi, both China and Indonesia will fully support Palestine’s membership in the UN,” Retno told reporters after the meeting.
On the same occasion, Wang Yi criticized the position of the United States (US) regarding the Gaza conflict.
The US, as Israel’s key ally and military supporter, has used its veto power to block a ceasefire resolution.
In late March, the US finally withdrew, allowing the UN Security Council to pass resolution 2728 calling for a ceasefire during Ramadan.
“However, the US said the resolution was not binding, and the world was very surprised by the US statement. This shows that for the US, international law is only a tool that they use as they wish. The UN Charter states that Security Council resolutions are binding on all UN members,” said Wang Yi.
“The US should put aside its ego and listen to what the international community has to say. We are aware that US officials should re-learn basic knowledge,” said Wang Yi.
Meanwhile, on Friday, April 19 2024, the UN Security Council will vote on a draft resolution recommending Palestinian membership in the UN.
The UN Security Council has 15 members, consisting of 5 permanent members and 10 non-permanent members.
China, the US, Britain, France and Russia are permanent members, meaning they have veto power. The resolution will only be approved if it gets 9 votes in favor without a veto.
Once Palestine gets a recommendation from the council, it needs a two-thirds majority vote of the 193 members of the UN General Assembly before it becomes a full member.
Currently, Israel is a member of the UN, while Palestine only has observer status. Palestine’s non-member observer status allows it to speak at General Assembly meetings, but cannot vote on resolutions. (ATN)
