ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The failure of the United Nations Security Council to approve Palestine as a full member of the United Nations due to a veto from the United States, has caused a reaction from the international community, including Indonesia.
The United Nations Security Council recently voted on a resolution regarding Palestine’s United Nations membership. As predicted, the US – a military ally and supporter of Israel – used a veto to prevent the resolution from being approved.
Indonesia, which emphasized its support for Palestine, expressed its disappointment with the veto.
Through a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Indonesia stated that the veto was a betrayal of the common goal of creating lasting peace in the Middle East.
“Indonesia deeply regrets the failure of the United Nations Security Council for the umpteenth time to pass a resolution regarding Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations, due to a veto by one of the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council,” said a statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Friday , April 19, 2024.
“This veto once again betrays our shared aspirations to create long-term peace in the Middle East,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Since 2012, Palestine has been a non-member observer at the United Nations. In other words, Palestinians can speak at United Nations General Assembly meetings, but cannot vote on resolutions, especially those related to the Gaza conflict.
“Indonesia reiterates its support for Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations, which will give Palestine its rightful seat among nations and an equal position in the peace process towards a two-state solution,” added the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The two-state solution is a plan to create a Palestinian state separate from the state of Israel.
In a United Nations Security Council vote, the US rejected a resolution that would have recommended Palestinian membership in the United Nations. Britain and Switzerland abstained, while 12 other members voted in favor.
A resolution can only be approved if it gets 9 votes in favor without a veto. If the resolution is approved, Palestine would then need a two-thirds majority vote of the 193-member United Nations General Assembly before it could become a full member.
The United Nations Security Council consists of 15 members, 5 permanent members and 10 non-permanent members. All permanent members, the US, UK, China, France and Russia have the power to issue a veto on resolutions. (ATN)
