ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Mount Merapi, which is on the border of Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta, has been declared at alert level 3. Lava falls occurred 13 times on Saturday, June 22 2024 morning. Residents are prohibited from carrying out activities within a 3 kilometer radius from the peak of Mount Merapi.
Based on official data from the Center for Research and Development of Geological Disaster Technology (BPPTKG) on Saturday, Mount Merapi experienced lava avalanches 13 times with a sliding distance of 1,500 meters towards the southwest or Kali Bebeng.
Meanwhile, the avalanche lasted 60 to 137 seconds with a tectonic distance of 3 millimeters with a duration of 34.2 seconds.
BPPTKG has announced the current potential danger in the form of lava avalanches and hot clouds in the south-southwest sector covering the Boyong River for a maximum of 5 kilometers. Apart from that, the lava avalanche will pass through the Bedog, Krasak and Bebeng Rivers for a maximum distance of 7 kilometers. In the southeast sector, it covers the Woro River for a maximum of 3 kilometers and the Gendol River for 5 kilometers.
“The ejection of volcanic material if an explosive eruption occurs can reach a radius of 3 kilometers from the peak,” according to BPPTKG information.
BPPTKG monitoring data shows that the magma supply is still ongoing, which triggers hot clouds of avalanches in potential danger areas.
“The public should not carry out any activities in potential danger areas. People should be aware of the dangers of lava and hot clouds falling, especially when it rains around Mount Merapi.” (ATN)
