ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – South Korean investigating prosecutors have searched the offices of Hyundai Engineering & Construction (E&C) regarding alleged bribery of regional heads in Cirebon, West Java, Indonesia.

Reported by the Yonhap news agency, the search was related to the alleged bribe of Hyundai E&C executives to regional heads in Cirebon amounting to 600 million won. The billions were allegedly spent by Hyundai E&C officials to quell complaints from local residents regarding the process of building a coal power plant in Cirebon.

“Prosecutors reportedly suspect that a Hyundai E&C executive gave around 600 million won to regional heads in Indonesia,” wrote Yonhap, quoted Sunday, November 10, 2024.

Meanwhile, the search was carried out at the Hyundai E&C office, Seoul on Wednesday, November 6 2024. A number of items were confiscated during the search, namely documents and computer data related to the bribery case of Hyundai E&C executives.

For information, Hyundai E&C won the Cirebon power plant project worth $727 million in 2015.

On the other hand, the regional head in Cirebon who was suspected of accepting bribes from Hyundai, has also been sentenced to prison by a court in Indonesia. The regional official referred to in the case is suspected to be former Cirebon Regent Sunjaya Purwadisastra. He has been sentenced to seven years by the Bandung Corruption Court.

In October 2023, his sentence in cases of gratification, bribery and money laundering was increased to nine years on appeal. (AT Network)
