ASIATODAY.ID, KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia and Japan have agreed to chair a ministerial level meeting at the East Asian Nations Cooperation Conference for the Development of Palestine (CEAPAD) in July 2025.
Malaysian Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, in a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba, which was broadcast online from Kuala Lumpur on Friday, stated that Malaysia supports Japan’s initiatives on regional issues.
This support is demonstrated by Malaysia’s willingness to co-chair the CEAPAD ministerial level meeting which will take place next July.
“The conference is an effort to reconstruct Gaza and Palestine, and the initiative is very meaningful for Malaysia and other Muslim countries in the world,” said Anwar.
Malaysia and Japan also agreed on the need to strengthen cooperation through ASEAN, where Malaysia occupies the position of chairman of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this year.
Malaysia is also ready to support the Asian Net Zero Emissions Community (AZEC) initiative and Anwar said he would coordinate with fellow ASEAN countries regarding holding the conference in Kuala Lumpur on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit.
Anwar Ibrahim and Shigeru Ishiba together with their respective delegations held a bilateral meeting for more than an hour in Putrajaya.
During the meeting, they discussed the South China Sea issue and agreed to maintain regional stability by resolving any disputes through diplomacy and based on international law.
The two leaders in the Asian region also discussed regional issues of mutual interest, including resolving the Myanmar conflict based on the Five Point Consensus (5P).
Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba agreed to work together to ensure regional security and stability.
He also said that Malaysia, as a country with a majority Muslim population, has a strategic role in bridging the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
In the bilateral meeting with PM Anwar, PM Ishiba also exchanged further ideas regarding the issues of the East China Sea, South China Sea, Middle East and Myanmar and agreed to work together to maintain regional security and stability. (AT Network)
