ASIATODAY.ID, WASHINGTON – Indonesia and the United States have reaffirmed their strong commitment to expanding their strategic partnership across a wide range of sectors, including political-security cooperation, trade, and investment.
This commitment was solidified during a bilateral meeting between Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono, and U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, held at the U.S. Department of State in Washington D.C, April 16, 2025. The meeting followed up on a phone conversation between the two foreign ministers earlier in January 2025.
During the discussion, Foreign Minister Sugiono outlined several key initiatives under President Prabowo Subianto’s “Asta Cita” national development vision. These priorities include: Strengthening food and energy security, Advancing downstream industrialization, Enhancing human capital development.
These national priorities open up concrete opportunities for deeper Indonesia-US collaboration. Minister Sugiono specifically encouraged stronger economic cooperation, inviting U.S. investors to participate in critical sectors such as critical minerals, including nickel, and other strategic industries that support global supply chain resilience.
“The Indonesian government has undertaken extensive deregulation to facilitate a more conducive environment for foreign investment,” said Minister Sugiono.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties Amid Global Geopolitical Shifts
Secretary Rubio highlighted the timeliness of this enhanced cooperation amid current global geopolitical dynamics. Both ministers acknowledged the importance of reinforcing bilateral ties to address shared challenges and maintain regional stability.
In addition to bilateral issues, the two diplomats discussed pressing regional and global concerns, including the South China Sea and the ongoing conflict in Palestine. They emphasized the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and cooperative approaches to foster peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
Minister Sugiono also spotlighted Indonesia’s active role in promoting peace in Palestine, led by President Prabowo’s recent diplomatic visits to Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, the UAE, and Turkey.
“Indonesia is prepared to temporarily evacuate around 1,000 injured Palestinians from Gaza to receive medical treatment in Indonesia. They will be returned to Gaza upon recovery,” Minister Sugiono stated.
He reaffirmed Indonesia’s firm stance against the relocation of Palestinians from their homeland in Gaza.
