ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Tragedy has struck Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the sudden and shocking death of a promising young diplomat, Arya Daru Pangayunan, who was found dead in his rented room in Gondangdia Kecil, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
Arya, a 39-year-old Junior Diplomatic Officer at the Directorate for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens, was discovered lifeless with his head wrapped in yellow duct tape and his body covered with a navy-blue blanket—a scene that has stunned both the local community and diplomatic circles.
“The victim was found around 8:30 AM. The door was unlocked,” confirmed Menteng Police Chief, Commissioner Rezha Rahandhi, speaking to reporters on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
His body was discovered by the boarding house caretaker, who became suspicious after noticing that Arya had not left his room all morning. Upon entering, the caretaker found Arya lying unresponsive on his bed.
Born in Sleman, Yogyakarta, Arya Daru was a respected alumnus of Gadjah Mada University’s International Relations program, one of Indonesia’s leading institutions for diplomacy and international affairs. Known for his quiet demeanor, humility, and unwavering commitment to public service, Arya had built a reputation for excellence.
He officially joined the Foreign Ministry in January 2014, following an earlier posting at the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon (2011–2013). His career then advanced rapidly with assignments as Third Secretary for Political Affairs in Dili, Timor-Leste (2018–2020) and Second Secretary in Buenos Aires, Argentina (2020–2022).
Arya was scheduled to undertake a significant new diplomatic mission in Helsinki, Finland, later this July—highlighting the government’s trust in his capability and integrity.
Police Investigation Underway
The exact cause of Arya’s death remains unclear. Police have launched an investigation, questioning witnesses including the caretaker and some of Arya’s colleagues. As of now, no official determination has been made as to whether his death involved foul play, suicide, or other factors.
“We are still investigating. There is no conclusion yet on the cause of death,” said Commissioner Rezha.
