ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — The Indonesian government is poised to adopt biotransformation technology as an innovative solution for developing environmentally friendly biodegradable plastics.
This commitment was emphasized by Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita during a meeting with the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate and Energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, at the Ministry of Industry headquarters on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
The discussion centered on the introduction of breakthrough technology from the United Kingdom that focuses on accelerating the degradation of single-use plastics through a controlled and eco-friendly process.
“This technology presents a tangible solution to the plastic waste crisis, particularly for single-use products. With an environmentally conscious approach, Indonesia has the potential to become a regional leader in the application of biodegradable plastics,” said Minister Agus.
The Advantages of Biotransformation Technology
Biotransformation technology marks a major step forward in the transition to a green industry. Plastics produced using this method can naturally degrade in a short period without leaving behind microplastics or toxic residues. Additional benefits include recyclability and customizable biodegradation timelines tailored to industrial needs.
These features make the technology a strategic tool in addressing global environmental challenges while supporting sustainable industrial development.
Minister Agus stated that the Ministry will follow up on this initiative through several key actions: developing a Draft National Industrial Standard (RSNI) for biodegradable plastic products, mapping potential raw materials, particularly plant-based sources, that do not interfere with national food security, formulating a green technology roadmap and action plan in collaboration with multiple stakeholders, offering incentives to industry players who adopt environmentally friendly plastic technologies.
“We must ensure that all domestic plastic products meet strict environmental standards. This is not only crucial for sustainability but also opens up export opportunities in global markets that are increasingly concerned with environmental issues,” he added.
Driving the Green Industry Transformation
The Ministry also emphasized the importance of integrated research into plant-based materials for both food and industrial uses. This dual-purpose strategy aims to avoid conflict between food security and the needs of sustainable industry.
To support this green transformation, the Ministry of Industry will encourage cross-sector collaboration and private sector engagement. Financial incentives, regulatory support, and a long-term vision are all part of the government’s strategy to promote green innovation in manufacturing.
With advanced biotransformation technology and cross-sector collaboration, Indonesia is taking a significant step toward a greener, more sustainable future for its plastic industry. (AT Network)
