Several Countries Issue Travel Warnings for Indonesia

Demonstrations in Jakarta, August 29, 2025. Doc

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – A number of countries have officially issued travel warnings for Indonesia following large-scale demonstrations that erupted across multiple regions since late August 2025.

From the United States to Canada, the advisories urge their citizens to remain vigilant, avoid protest areas, and closely monitor the latest developments.

The United States was among the first to issue an official warning. The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta advised its citizens to stay away from high-risk areas, particularly around Mako Brimob, Kramat, and Senen in Central Jakarta.

“Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations. Monitor local media for updates. Avoid crowds. Stay aware of your surroundings,” the Embassy wrote on Monday, September 1, 2025.

Malaysia followed with similar advice, urging its citizens—both residents and visitors—to closely monitor the evolving situation. Singapore went further by advising its citizens to complete an e-Registration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a precaution and to stay away from demonstration hotspots.

European Nations Issue Cautions

France, through its official Instagram account @franceinindonesia, reminded its citizens to follow local authority instructions and avoid high-risk areas.

Japan also urged its citizens to steer clear of police facilities as well as the Parliament and Regional House of Representatives buildings, which are common gathering points for mass protests.

Philippines, UK, and Canada Call for Extra Vigilance

The Philippine Embassy advised its nationals to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary. The United Kingdom took a firmer stance, explicitly warning its citizens to avoid all political and student protests, stressing that such demonstrations could escalate into violence without warning.

Canada highlighted that protests since August 25 had already turned violent, with police deploying tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds in Jakarta.

Countries That Have Issued Travel Warnings for Indonesia

So far, at least eight countries have issued travel advisories for Indonesia in response to the escalating demonstrations:

1. United States

2. Malaysia

3. Singapore

4. France

5. Japan

6. Philippines

7. United Kingdom

8. Canada
