ASIATODAY.ID, BATANGAS – Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) has officially launched the first baseload solar power plant (PLTS) in the Philippines. The facility has a capacity of 197 megawatt peak (MWp) and is supported by a 320 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS).
The project is developed by Citicore Renewable Energy Corporation (CREC), a Pertamina NRE affiliate, and was inaugurated by Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. on Monday, September 15, 2025.
Hybrid and Baseload Solar Power in the Philippines
PLTS Batangas is located across two sites: Lumbangan (125 MWp) and Luntal (72 MWp). With the 320 MWh BESS integration, this project becomes the first hybrid and baseload solar power plant in the Philippines, capable of providing continuous clean electricity 24/7.
John Anis, CEO of Pertamina NRE, called this achievement a milestone for the energy transition in the region.
“The 197 MWp solar plant with 320 MWh BESS is not only a major achievement for the Philippines, but also strengthens Pertamina NRE’s renewable energy portfolio. CREC aims to add 1 gigawatt of capacity per year over the next five years,” he said.
Philippine Government Appreciation
President Marcos Jr. expressed full appreciation for the project and hopes CREC will remain consistent in expanding clean energy. He noted that the project could serve as a role model for other countries, including Indonesia, in addressing renewable energy intermittency challenges.
Beyond its technical success, CREC also posted impressive financial performance in the first half of 2025:
Revenue: ₱2.66 billion (USD 134 million)
Net profit: up 38% to ₱630 million (USD 32 million)
Stock price: increased 32% year-to-date
Environmental Impact of PLTS Batangas
PLTS Batangas is projected to reduce carbon emissions by 265,933 tons of CO₂e per year. This is equivalent to the carbon absorption of more than 12 million trees. Additionally, the plant can provide clean electricity for 158,300 households.
Pertamina Strengthens ASEAN Renewable Energy Leadership
Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication at Pertamina, emphasized the company’s commitment to leading the energy transition in the region.
“Pertamina fully supports the development of renewable energy and targets net zero emissions by 2060. All initiatives align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) principles and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” he said.
With the operation of the first baseload solar power plant in the Philippines, Pertamina NRE strengthens its regional renewable energy portfolio, demonstrating leadership in supporting a sustainable energy transition across Southeast Asia. (AT Network)
