ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia’s automotive industry has reached another historic milestone.

Toyota Indonesia has successfully achieved its 3 millionth vehicle export, marking a major achievement for the nation’s manufacturing sector. The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) commended the accomplishment, calling it clear evidence of Indonesia’s robust and globally competitive manufacturing capability.

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said that Toyota Indonesia continues to play a key role as a driving force for the national automotive industry.

“Reaching three million units in exports is a monumental achievement that proves our industrial structure is increasingly strong, resilient, and adaptive to global economic dynamics,” the Minister stated in Jakarta, quoted on Monday, October 13, 2025.

The Minister emphasized that the automotive sector has a substantial multiplier effect on the national economy. In 2024, the gross value added of the motor vehicle industry reached IDR 180 trillion, with a backward linkage of 2.07 and a forward linkage of 2.4 — generating an additional IDR 804 trillion impact across upstream and downstream sectors.

“The automotive industry is not just about producing vehicles; it drives an entire ecosystem of supporting industries — from steel, rubber, and plastics to transportation and logistics,” Agus explained.

Toyota Indonesia has also developed partnerships with more than 700 supplier companies and employs over 360,000 workers, making a significant contribution to Indonesia’s economic growth.

Minister Agus further highlighted the government’s commitment to building a green and low-emission industrial ecosystem.

“This export milestone is not only a national pride but also a momentum to accelerate the adoption of green technologies. Indonesia aims to become a major player in the low-emission vehicle segment in Asia,” he added.

Toyota Strengthens Indonesia as a Global Production and R&D Hub

Koji Sato, President of Toyota Motor Corporation, expressed deep appreciation for the achievement.

“Reaching three million exported vehicles is a testament to Indonesia’s exceptional capability to deliver world-class products. We sincerely thank the Government of Indonesia, our customers, and all partners for their continued trust and collaboration over more than five decades,” said Koji Sato.

He also stated that Toyota will continue to strengthen Indonesia’s role as a center for Research and Development (R&D) and as an export hub for the Global South.

“Together with our partners, we will continue to create ever-better vehicles for the people of Indonesia and contribute to the progress of this great nation,” he affirmed.

Toyota Group has invested approximately IDR 100 trillion (USD 6 billion) in Indonesia, working closely with over 240 local Tier-1 suppliers and 520 Tier-2 and Tier-3 suppliers. As a result, Toyota vehicles produced in Indonesia now have more than 80% local content.

According to Nandi Julyanto, President Director of PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN),

“The strong collaboration between Toyota and local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) not only reduces import dependency but also enhances national industrial independence,” he added,

“With our robust manufacturing capabilities and commitment to quality, Toyota Indonesia has produced 10 million vehicles and exported 3 million units to over 100 countries. This proves that Indonesian talent can compete globally with world-class products.”

Driving Fiscal Growth through Tax Contributions

Beyond exports, the automotive industry contributes significantly to national and regional tax revenues, including income tax (PPh), value-added tax (VAT), luxury goods tax (PPnBM), and regional taxes such as Vehicle Tax (PKB) and Vehicle Ownership Transfer Fee (BBNKB).

The Ministry of Home Affairs noted that the sector serves as one of the main sources of local revenue (PAD), strengthening fiscal capacity across regions.

The achievement of Toyota Indonesia’s 3 million vehicle exports marks a new era for Indonesia’s automotive growth story. Supported by government policy, strong investment, and an expanding local supply chain, Indonesia is now solidifying its position as a global automotive production hub and a center for sustainable vehicle innovation in Asia.
