ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — The friendship between Indonesia and South Africa entered a new and promising chapter as President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa hailed Indonesia as a strategic partner and the torchbearer of the Bandung Spirit.
The statement was made during a joint press conference with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, following a warm and productive bilateral meeting between the two leaders.
“It is a great honor for me to make this state visit to the beautiful country of Indonesia. Our relations are deeply rooted in history—stretching back over 350 years since the time of Dutch colonialism,” said President Ramaphosa.

President Ramaphosa underlined that Indonesia and South Africa share a deeply rooted historical bond, dating back to the 17th century when Indonesians were brought to South Africa by Dutch colonizers.
He also expressed profound appreciation for Indonesia’s role in the 1955 Bandung Conference of Asian and African nations, which became a symbol of solidarity and anti-colonial unity that inspired the South African liberation movement.
“We extend our congratulations to Indonesia on the 70th anniversary of the historic Bandung Conference. It remains a symbol of the collective struggle of nations for freedom, equality, and justice,” he stated.
BRICS: A New Era of Economic and Political Cooperation
President Ramaphosa welcomed Indonesia’s accession as the newest member of BRICS, describing it as a turning point in strengthening cooperation between emerging economies and driving reform toward a fairer global system.
“We agreed to expand trade between our two countries as a catalyst for inclusive and sustainable growth. Indonesia and South Africa face similar geopolitical challenges, and thus we must enhance collaboration across all sectors,” Ramaphosa emphasized.
He also reaffirmed both nations’ shared commitment to strengthen multilateralism and promote peaceful conflict resolution, including support for a two-state solution in the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

President Prabowo Subianto expressed his deep appreciation for President Ramaphosa’s state visit, calling it a milestone in advancing the Indonesia–South Africa strategic partnership.
