ASIATODAY.ID, MANILA — A new chapter begins for Kiribati’s education sector as the Asian Development Bank (ADB) approves a $30 million grant to boost access to high-quality primary and secondary education across the Pacific island nation.
Under the “Equitable Access to Quality Education Project,” ADB will fund the construction of modern, disaster-resilient classrooms, gender-responsive dormitories, and safe recreational spaces. The project will also provide transportation for students, upgrade curricula through digital learning, and enhance teacher capacity through specialized training programs.
“This project removes the barriers that keep too many children—especially those in outer island communities—from finishing school,” said Aaron Batten, Regional Director of ADB’s Pacific Subregional Office on October 29, 2025.
“By improving transport, classrooms, digital learning, and teacher training, more children will be able to complete their education.”
The $30 million grant will be financed through ADB’s Asian Development Fund (ADF), complemented by $5 million in cofinancing from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE). The initiative aligns closely with the Kiribati–Australia Education Program, a 10-year partnership focused on education development in Tungaru.
According to Laura Frigenti, CEO of GPE, the collaboration underscores the power of joint investment in education resilience.
“Equitable access to quality education starts with safe, well-equipped schools,” said Frigenti.
“By joining forces with ADB and the Government of Australia, we can ensure every child in Kiribati has the opportunity to learn and thrive.”
The Asian Development Fund (ADF) supports the poorest and most vulnerable nations in Asia and the Pacific. From 2021–2024, it has helped lift 384,000 people out of poverty and create over 500,000 jobs.
As a leading multilateral development bank, ADB remains committed to advancing inclusive, resilient, and sustainable growth across the region. Since its founding in 1966, ADB—owned by 69 member countries, including 50 from Asia and the Pacific—has championed innovative financing, strategic partnerships, and transformative solutions to improve lives and safeguard the planet.
