ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian government emphasized a cautious and strategic approach in its ongoing tariff negotiations with the United States (U.S.), reaffirming that national interests remain the top priority.

Indonesia is among the first countries to reach a preliminary understanding following the official statement by the U.S. President on July 7, 2025, which announced a tariff reduction from 32% to 19%. The agreement is now undergoing a thorough legal drafting process to ensure that all provisions align with Indonesia’s national regulations, international commitments, and can be effectively implemented.

“This negotiation process is being conducted carefully as part of Indonesia’s prudent economic diplomacy. The government is committed to ensuring that every economic agreement delivers tangible benefits for the people, strengthens the national industrial structure, and maintains Indonesia’s position as a strategically independent and neutral partner amid global geopolitical shifts,” said Haryo Limanseto, Spokesperson for the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs on Monday, November 3, 2025.

Airlangga Hartarto Leads Indonesia–U.S. Tariff Negotiation Team

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, who leads Indonesia’s negotiation team, expressed confidence that key Indonesian commodities such as palm oil, cocoa, and rubber—which are not produced in the U.S.—will qualify for a zero-percent tariff.

The government is also pushing for special treatment for selected products that support global healthcare supply chains, as well as for discussions on non-tariff barriers.

Following the APEC Summit at the end of November 2025, Indonesia plans to advance to the next round of negotiations to refine technical matters and finalize the draft agreement.

National Interests at the Core of Economic Diplomacy

Throughout the negotiation process, Indonesia upholds the principle of fair and balanced trade, ensuring that any offer presented to the U.S. reflects equity and reciprocity.

“As a sovereign nation, Indonesia practices a free and active economic diplomacy, ensuring that every policy decision and trade negotiation safeguards national interests, strengthens economic sovereignty, and delivers real benefits for economic growth and public welfare,” Haryo added. (AT Network)
