ASIATODAY.ID, NEW YORK — U.S. President Donald Trump reacted angrily after Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani secured more than 50 percent of the votes in New York’s mayoral election on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.
In a fiery post on Truth Social, Trump blamed the Republican Party’s losses in New York, New Jersey, and Virginia on his absence from the ballot and the recent government shutdown.
“TRUMP IS NOT ON THE BALLOT, AND THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN ARE TWO REASONS REPUBLICANS LOST TONIGHT,” Trump wrote, citing what he called internal polling data.
A Historic Win for Mamdani
At 34, Zohran Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, becoming the youngest and first Muslim mayor in New York City’s history.
Mamdani succeeds Eric Adams, who withdrew from the race in September despite remaining on the ballot. Previously a New York State Assembly member from Queens, Mamdani rose to prominence with a campaign focused on affordability, social justice, and inclusive governance.
Trump vs. Mamdani: A Political Showdown
The election turned into a political battleground between Mamdani and President Trump. Although not on the ballot, Trump repeatedly attacked Mamdani, labeling him a “communist” and a “disaster for New York.”
Mamdani responded calmly yet firmly.
“I will work with the president for the good of New Yorkers, but I will not bow down. If you make life harder for New Yorkers, I’ll be there to fight back,” he said in an interview with the political satire channel The Good Liars.
Trump even urged his supporters to back Cuomo in an effort to block Mamdani’s victory and warned he might cut federal aid to New York if Mamdani were elected.
“If the communist candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the New York City mayoral election, I will hardly give more than the minimum federal funding required,” Trump wrote.
New York Under Global Spotlight
Mamdani’s victory marks a turning point for New York, a city of over 8 million residents with an annual budget of $116 billion. As mayor, he will face major challenges in housing, education, policing, and digital transformation.
New York remains one of the world’s foremost innovation hubs, hosting over 2,000 artificial intelligence startups and tens of thousands of tech workers—making it one of the largest AI ecosystems outside Silicon Valley.
While many view Mamdani’s win as a symbol of progress and diversity, conservative circles warn that it reflects a broader ideological shift that could deepen national polarization in the United States.
Zohran Mamdani is set to take office in early 2026—ushering in a new era for New York and a fresh chapter in the city’s tense relationship with the White House. (AT Network)
