Indonesia’s Task Force Foils Attempted Nickel Smuggling at IWIP Private Airport

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — The Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) is under intense national scrutiny after authorities uncovered an alleged attempt to smuggle mineral materials through the Weda Bay Special Airport.

The incident has triggered a firm response from the central government, with Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin emphasizing that the state will not tolerate activities that threaten Indonesia’s sovereignty or natural resources.

The case emerged on Friday, December 5, 2025 when a foreign national, identified as MY, was detained by the IWIP Airport Joint Task Force for carrying five packs of nickel powder and four packs of pure nickel.

MY was intercepted before boarding a Super Air Jet flight from Weda Bay (WDB) to Manado (MDC). The arrest follows a tightening of airport security ordered by the government earlier this week.

Defense Minister Sjafrie: “The State Must Prevail—No Exceptions”

Minister Sjafrie praised the task force members who prevented the smuggling attempt, calling it evidence of the government’s firm commitment to safeguarding national mineral assets.

“The state is here to enforce the law and uphold regulations. There must be no republic within a republic,” Sjafrie stressed.

He underscored that special airports operating with minimal state oversight—such as IWIP’s facility—will no longer be allowed to function without direct government control.

Since late November, the government has deployed a Joint Task Force consisting of Customs, Immigration, Police, the Armed Forces, Animal and Plant Quarantine, Health Quarantine, BMKG, AirNav, and AvSec to oversee airport operations.

The mandate is clear: prevent any illegal outflow of Indonesia’s critical mineral resources.

Joint Task Force: A Concrete Step to Control Mineral Supply Chains

The arrest of MY highlights the effectiveness of the recently deployed task force. While the motive and full chronology of the case have not yet been revealed, authorities confirm that the suspect is undergoing deeper interrogation.

The strengthened security measures aim not only to curb smuggling but also to prevent unmonitored activities by foreign workers or private entities within the massive industrial zone—one of Indonesia’s most strategic centers for nickel processing.

IWIP Responds: “It Was Not Nickel—It Was Alumina for Internal Testing”

Amid widespread headlines about “nickel smuggling,” IWIP issued an official clarification. According to the company:

The material seized was alumina, not nickel.

It belonged to one of the tenants operating an aluminum-related facility.

The sample was slated for laboratory testing in Jakarta.

The shipment was halted only because supporting documents were incomplete during the X-ray inspection.

The material was secured by Aviation Security (AvSec), not by external law enforcement agencies.

No individual was detained, and no legal investigation was initiated outside airport authorities.

IWIP urged the public to avoid speculation and wait for an official, verified explanation.

A Conflicting Narrative, and Rising Public Concerns

Despite IWIP’s clarification, the incident has sparked discussions nationwide. Many are questioning: why information from airport authorities and IWIP diverged; whether strategic minerals are sufficiently protected in major industrial parks; and how secure Indonesia’s nickel supply chain truly is.

The case has added to existing concerns about mineral governance, especially in high-investment zones where foreign workers and complex supply chains are involved.

Government Tightens Its Grip on IWIP

The incident at IWIP has become a turning point. The central government’s message is unmistakable: Indonesia will not allow critical resources to be extracted, moved, or exported outside legal channels.

With the deployment of the Joint Task Force and increasing scrutiny from the Defense Ministry, IWIP and other private airports must now operate under full state oversight.

The Weda Bay incident serves as a strong reminder that the era of unchecked mineral flows is over—and the government intends to enforce it. (AT Network)
