ASIATODAY.ID, SOMALI – Somalia has terminated all agreements with the United Arab Emirates, including port management and defense cooperation deals, accusing Abu Dhabi of actions that violate the country’s sovereignty and independence.
The decision was taken by Somalia’s Council of Ministers on Monday, January 13, 2026, following a review of what officials described as “serious and concerning developments.”
Somali Defense Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi said the move was based on credible reports and evidence indicating Emirati practices that breach fundamental principles of state sovereignty and non-interference.
“These actions constitute a clear violation of the principles of sovereignty, respect for state independence, and non-interference in internal affairs,” Fiqi said in a statement posted on X.
As a result, Somalia has canceled all partnerships related to the ports of Berbera, Bosaso, and Kismayo, as well as security and defense cooperation agreements.
The government has not publicly detailed the specific actions by the UAE that prompted the sweeping decision. Abu Dhabi has so far not responded to the allegations.
Tensions escalated last week after Somalia’s immigration authority announced an investigation into the “unauthorized” use of Somali airspace and airports by external actors.
The probe is linked to the alleged movement of Aidarus al-Zoubaidi, leader of Yemen’s Southern Transitional Council, who reportedly traveled via the port of Berbera in Somaliland before flying to the UAE on January 8, after declining Saudi-led talks in Riyadh.
Somali authorities warned that, if confirmed, the incident would amount to a serious breach of national sovereignty and existing bilateral arrangements.
The diplomatic rupture also comes amid rising geopolitical tensions following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland’s independence in late December 2025.
Somaliland, a self-declared breakaway region in northwestern Somalia, has sought international recognition since declaring independence in 1991.
Israel’s move triggered widespread condemnation and heightened concerns in Mogadishu over territorial integrity.
Analysts cited by the Somali Guardian claim the UAE played a behind-the-scenes role in influencing Israel’s decision.
Axios also reported that Israeli officials acknowledged Emirati facilitation of the recognition, despite the UAE previously affirming its support for Somalia’s territorial unity in a joint statement with the African Union on January 6.
By severing all strategic agreements with the UAE, Somalia has sent a clear signal that its sovereignty is non-negotiable, even in relations with powerful regional partners deeply embedded in the Horn of Africa’s economic and security landscape. (RT)
