ASIATODAY.ID, PONTIANAK – Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy corporation, Rosatom, has expressed its readiness to develop a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and support the construction of an aluminum smelter in West Kalimantan, Indonesia.
The proposal was conveyed during a meeting between Russian Ambassador to Indonesia, Sergei Tolchenov, and West Kalimantan Governor, Ria Norsan, on Friday, February 27, 2026.
Tolchenov stated that Russia aims to introduce its advanced nuclear technology while exploring strategic cooperation with the provincial government.
“We are offering proven and reliable nuclear power plant management technology. This visit is intended to open concrete cooperation in energy and industrial development,” Tolchenov said.
Reactor Capacity of 100–1,200 MW
Rosatom representative Anna Belokoneva explained that the company possesses reactor technology capable of generating between 100 and 1,200 megawatts per unit, equipped with high international safety standards and multilayered protection systems.
The proposed nuclear facility is seen as a long-term solution to meet growing electricity demand, particularly to support downstream industrialization in resource-rich regions such as West Kalimantan.
Boosting Bauxite Downstreaming
Beyond nuclear energy, the Russian delegation also included investors from the mining and aluminum processing sectors. West Kalimantan is known as one of Indonesia’s major bauxite-producing regions.
The development of an aluminum smelter would significantly increase domestic value-added processing, strengthening Indonesia’s position in the global mineral supply chain.
Tolchenov emphasized that the realization of the projects depends on the readiness of the Indonesian government and official responses from the West Kalimantan administration. Russia, he added, stands ready to proceed once formal cooperation channels are opened.
The meeting signals a potential new chapter in Indonesia–Russia strategic cooperation in energy and heavy industry, with West Kalimantan positioned as a key investment hub. (AT Network)
