ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesian President and German President reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties as both nations seek closer cooperation in navigating growing global challenges and geopolitical uncertainty.
The pledge was highlighted during a state luncheon hosted by President Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday as part of President Steinmeier’s official state visit to Indonesia.
Speaking before government officials and dignitaries, Prabowo described Germany as one of Indonesia’s most important partners in Europe, emphasizing that 74 years of diplomatic relations have delivered tangible benefits for both countries.
“Germany holds a special place for Indonesia. For 74 years, our diplomatic relations have brought real benefits to our people and have made Germany one of Indonesia’s key partners in Europe,” Prabowo said.
The Indonesian leader praised Germany’s long-standing reputation for technological innovation, industrial excellence, institutional strength, and discipline, noting that generations of Indonesians have studied and received professional training in Germany.
Prabowo also highlighted the historical depth of relations between the two nations, saying connections between Indonesia and Germany predate Indonesia’s independence. German academic circles, he noted, played an important role in introducing Indonesia to the wider international community.
“Although our countries will soon celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations, the roots of our relationship stretch back long before Indonesia gained independence,” he said.
Reflecting on his own experience, Prabowo recalled undergoing military training in Germany in 1981, describing it as a personal example of the country’s influence on Indonesia’s human capital development and technological advancement.
The Indonesian president expressed hope that Steinmeier’s visit would open new opportunities for cooperation across strategic sectors, including trade, investment, industry, education, innovation, and technology development.
Against a backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty, both leaders underscored the importance of stronger international partnerships to support stability, prosperity, and sustainable development.
Closing his remarks, Prabowo thanked President Steinmeier for visiting Indonesia and voiced optimism that bilateral relations would continue to expand in the years ahead.
“We hope the people of Indonesia and Germany will continue to prosper together and enjoy the benefits of an even stronger friendship,” Prabowo said.
Steinmeier’s visit comes as Indonesia and Germany prepare to mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, a milestone that both governments see as an opportunity to elevate cooperation and deepen their strategic partnership for the future. (AT Network)
