ASIATODAY.ID, KAZAN – ASEAN and Russia have agreed to deepen economic cooperation across key strategic sectors including energy, food security, and trade, as both sides seek to strengthen resilience amid growing global geopolitical and economic uncertainty.
The agreement was reached during the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit marking 35 years of partnership, held in Kazan, Russia, on 17–18 June 2026.
Indonesia, representing President Prabowo Subianto, was led by Foreign Minister Sugiono, who emphasized the importance of strengthening ASEAN centrality while expanding practical cooperation with global partners.

“Resilience is strengthened by the quality of our partnerships. Therefore, choosing our partners wisely is essential,” Sugiono said, underscoring ASEAN’s strategic role in navigating global uncertainty.
Energy and Food Security at the Core
Russia’s position as a major global energy producer featured prominently in discussions, with ASEAN highlighting opportunities for cooperation in oil and gas supply security as well as peaceful nuclear energy development.
Food security was also a key pillar, with Russia’s role as a major exporter of wheat and fertilizers seen as critical in stabilizing regional supply chains amid volatile global markets.
Sugiono stressed the need for joint action to ensure stable and affordable food supplies across the region.
Economic Integration with Eurasia
Both sides also discussed expanding economic integration between ASEAN and the Eurasian region through improved connectivity, investment flows, and trade facilitation.
The ASEAN–Russia Business Forum, held alongside the summit, brought together business leaders from both regions to explore new investment and commercial opportunities.
Global Issues and Multilateral Outlook
Indonesia welcomed ongoing diplomatic efforts toward peace between the United States and Iran, while reiterating concern over the humanitarian situation in Palestine and the need for sustained global stability.
Key Outcomes
The summit concluded with the adoption of four key documents: the Kazan Declaration, joint statements on energy and culture, and a five-year ASEAN–Russia Action Plan aimed at strengthening practical cooperation.
The outcomes reflect a shared ambition to move beyond dialogue toward more results-oriented economic engagement between ASEAN and Russia in an increasingly fragmented global landscape. (AT Network)
